Last Thursday May 8th, we organized an afternoon with Kentroy Yearwood - renown denim designer and passionate about creating a cleaner world -. He spoke about the "Past, Present and Future of Sustainability".
He took us along the current industrial process of garment manufacturing where too often waste is not managed but ignored, where cheap labor is a nicer name for slavery and the use of toxic materials is considered to be an economic necessity ... The conclusion, that a low price is nice for one's wallet, but unfortunately bad for one's conscience, was easy to draw.
For a long time it was very hard to produce materials that were both sustainable, beautiful and fashionable. When we invited him to talk about his passion we thought he would bring a few fabrics and materials to show. In fact the place was almost too small to display everything he brought. This showed that the myth while being environmentally conscious one can't be fashionable, cool or funky just isn't true! We got all inspired, not only to create new styles, but also to try and find solutions how to change the current system ... how to deal with price issues, new marketing strategies or retail concepts.
It is easy to say you are green, but living it is very hard! We have reached a point that we realize that "Greenwashing" is not satisfactory nor transparent. Using bio-cotton for just a small part of a collection, collecting only jeans for recycling or bringing in money after disasters like Rana Plaza in Bangladesh are just the first baby steps taken into the direction of conscious production and consumption.
We have to start focusing on what the impact is of our current economic behavior on the long run and we should create awareness that every cheap item has a "human price".
We are far from having made a beginning of a totally sustainable fashion industry! According to the discussions we had during and after the presentation, it was clear that at least the subject is on everybody's mind!
Enjoy the pictures and we hope you can join us for the next presentation!
