The Aquaponics Garden is an elegantly designed fish tank about the size of a toaster oven that lets you grow herbs and flowers organically, without adding any extra chemicals or fertilizers or even worrying about having to water the plants. All you have to do is to feed the fish and as the fish poop and pee inside the tank, the wastewater gets broken down by bacteria into nutrients. This water is then pumped up and upcycled as organic fertilizer for the plants growing above. The plants take up the nutrients and hence clean the water after which water again falls back down for the fish inside the tank.
The cool thing about the Aquaponic, is that the user doesn’t have to clean the water daily because of the plants. The system features a three-gallon fish tank which can be used for up to 3 fish and the top carries five pods with pebbles and no soil.
Back to The Roots distinguishes this new kit from their signature mushroom box in that it aims to deliver a "full closed-loop ecosystem," teaching eaters and would-be gardeners about every step in a natural plant-animal growing cycle. The mushroom kit, in contrast, provided users with a pre-treated growing medium and just a few shots at growing a healthy herd of mushrooms.
Check out their Kickstarter page that launched last Thursday to learn more about the project.
