Google has finally learned how to show instead of tell. Shot from the point of view of the Google Glass wearer, the video below, shows skydivers, ice skaters, ballerinas, skiers and pilots enjoying all of the augmented-reality and photo-capturing goodness of the glasses. Also, images on the Google Glass website show more uses for the READ MORE

frying-pan-bottoms

These photos might seem like the surfaces of Mars, Venus or any other (undiscovered) planet, but in reality, they are far from. Christopher Jonassen, a Norwegian photographer shot these beautiful and otherworldly series called ‘Devour of frying pan bottoms’, which are visually similar to the craters on a planet. By removing the handles, Christopher brings READ MORE

tattoo-infographic

While poorly made infographics are being called the “plague” of the internet, its awesome to see artists like Paul Marcinkowski (AKA Kaplon) create something truly original. You might remember the famous 1999 Stefan Sagmeister poster where the designer carved text into his own body with an X-acto knife. Needless to say, his unconventional method is READ MORE

the-future-of-space-travel

The future of space travel is closer than most of us think and last night, at the “future of space travel” conference in Amsterdam, scientists Gerard ‘t Hooft, Bas Lansdorp en Michel van Pelt all gave us amazingly clear explanations on how we will be returning some time soon. Nowadays several space agencies are taking second looks at historical READ MORE

As drones, facial recognition technology, and cellphone snooping are starting to affect the broader culture, the New York-based artist Adam Harvey has designed a line of high-tech garments made with sophisticated fabrics that can block signals and thwart cameras. daily-contaminations

These creatures aren’t some futuristic insect-bots developed by the government or some shadowy conspiracy group to infiltrate our homes. No, they’re little sculptures put together by London photographer Luca di Filippo, using pieces of electronic waste for his series, “Daily Contaminations”, in which they have been posed with food and photographed. These bugs with their READ MORE

garnier-coming-cool

Im loving this Publicis Switzerland campaign “For Any Hair Type” for Garnier Fructis, as between many boring or overly edited advertising photos this definitely finds some originality, shampoo that features guys with long beards that aren’t really beards and aren’t really attached to the guys. With the ad Garnier is responding to the fact that shampoo is for both READ MORE

DUTCH DESIGN IN MILAN

by Johanna Bilitza in , , , ,

The Salone Internazionale del Mobile (International Furniture Fair) 2012 starts today in Milan. It will be open on Saturday and Sunday to the general public. About 176 Dutch designers are represented during this global event.

Thanks to the independent foundation Materiaalfonds, who is celebrating its 40th birthday, a lot of young Dutch designers have the opportunity to be present in Milan. They offer artists and designers a loan in order to produce new work. Sjoerd Vroonland and Arjan Vaandrager developed and implemented their first saddle stool series with this loan. The Dutch designer Laurens van Wieringen working in Amsterdam will show his "Florian Series 2012" (hospitality & style award’ for best new bar design) via the company De Vorm who also launches their new collection. I like his grey, vintage car inspired "Buffet Cabinet" a lot. My other favorite is the wooden box "Schillendroger" for dried fruit slices created by the awarded designer Rianne Koens.

NORDIC HAUTE CUISINE: RESTAURANT NOMA

by Johanna Bilitza in , ,

The "noma" is a Danish two Michelin star restaurant in Copenhagen directed by René Redzepi. The name noma is a combination of the two Danish words nordisk (Nordic country) and mad (food). In 2010 and 2011 it has been labelled as the Best Restaurant in the World by "Restaurant", a British magazine dedicated to the fine dining end of the industry. The restaurant reinvents and redefines the Nordic kitchen. I really like the concept of only using products from Denmark and the Nordic regions. There is no olive oil, no tomatoes, but a lot of flowers, wild plants, berries, mushrooms. They cook with seasonal and local products. The menu changes with the seasons and is inspired by nature and the Nordic landscapes. René Redzepi also wrote a book "NOMA" about time and place in Nordic Cuisine, presenting the concept and the philosophy of his restaurant.

THE SONY +U APP, TO MAKE VOLUNTEERING EASIER AND MORE SOCIAL

by Miryam Muller in

Sony is rolling out a new Android mobile app that helps users to volunteer motivating them socially. With the +U title, the app demonstrates that everybody and you in particular can contribute to the volunteering organizations.

The app was developed together with the charity YouthNet and has open source code that allows anyone to use or repurpose it for free. Additionally, Sony will arrange a collaborative development event, Make/Time with Good for Nothing on March 29—31 during which the app will be introduced to European charities. The organizations will be explained how to modify the app to fit their needs.

+U is created to make volunteering easier and more social. It features geolocation as well as elements from social networking and gaming. Users are challenged to solve tasks to receive badges, and then they can share their achievements on Facebook.

The idea of creating the +U came up as a result of a joint Sony and WWF crowdsourcing initiative called Open Planet Ideas, which encouraged people to find new ways to repurpose technology to solve social and environmental problems. Sony expert panel chose +U as the optimal idea to develop.

MARINA BAY SANDS SKYPARK JUMP, 2012

by Miryam Muller in

Marina Bay Sands, Moshe Safdie’s Singaporean casino hotel complex and giant elevated surfboard, has become the de facto symbol of an island state characterized by its zany architecture. The structure soars 57 stories tall and straddles the cluster of shiny, sculptural buildings dwarfed by its three towers. Clearly, there is no better place for base-jumping, and on new years day 2012, seven pro jumpers made their way atop the iconic marina bay roof garden and leapt over the edge as nonchalant hotel guests waded and watched from the building’s sky high infinite pool.
