Urban historian, explorer, and photographer Steve Duncan goes underground, examining the hidden infrastructure of major cities all over the world.
Having investigated the underground world for years, traveling the tunnels, subways and sewers of cities including New York, Los Angeles, London and Paris, he has great knowledge of many subterranean worlds. He has hosted the Discovery Channel show Urban Explorers and has also appeared on the History Channel as a dedicated expert on the subject of New York City’s underground.
Steve brings his examinations to the world above through photographs. He transforms the dark and dirty hidden infrastructures, so rarely visited, into intriguing and approachable landscapes. As we live our daily lives, we forget the world that exists below our feet and Duncan strives to maintain an awareness of these important pieces of history.
He says, “I try to peel back the layers of a city to see what’s underneath. From the tops of bridges to the depths of sewer tunnels, these explorations of the urban environment help me puzzle together the interconnected, multi-dimensional history and complexity of the great metropolises of the world.”
Call him what you will, including crazy. But while you sleep, he’s plunged far below the city surface, headlamp on, an urban mole, exploring the nether region. Awesome.
